It is important to keep an eye on your chimney, and look for signs of disrepair, such as loose bricks or stones. The mortar may crack and crumble, with a sandy look, maybe even falling off the chimney structure. In some cases, the face of the bricks are “spalling”, where layers separate from the brick itself.

The Chimney Flue

It is important to regularly inspect and maintain the chimney flue, which vents smoke and hot gas from your fireplace. Some homes/buildings have chimneys with multiple flues that vent multiple sources of heat and smoke from the interior. Regular maintenance stops the build-up of creosote and other by-products, which can create the risk of chimney fires.

The Crown

Our experts at Liam’s Tuckpointing can detect cracks and crumbling in the bricks (or stone) and mortar. We can inspect the chimney crown for cracks which could allow moisture into the cement, which can freeze and expand during the winter months, causing further damage. We recommend replacing the crown every 20 years or so.

Crumbling Mortar and Stone

The top two feet of the chimney are typically the first to deteriorate, due to having the most exposure to harsh weather conditions. Our experts will examine your chimney and repair the areas that show crumbling and/or further deterioration. We will also restore the mortar joints through the process of tuckpointing, which will prolong the life of the chimney without having to rebuild it.

The Leaning Chimney

In cases where the chimney has separated from the supporting wall and/or has begun to lean, our experts have the knowledge and experience to rebuild the chimney if necessary.
